چکیده

In our six box model (6BM) the Southern Ocean is represented by an Antarctic and a Subantarctic region. For simplicity, the lower (blue) circulation is represented entirely by mixing between the Antarctic surface waters (box a) and the deep ocean (box d), Mixad. The upper (red) circulation is represented by upwelling in the Subantarctic region (box s) and the subsequent transport of water to the low latitude thermocline (box l) and northern latitudes (box n). By analogy with the GCM study, alkalinity, temperature and salinity are assumed constant such that the 6BM is a softtissue only model. Biological production is parameterized like in the GCM, as nutrient restoring with a 30 day time scale.

Deep-sea coral evidence for lower Southern Ocean surface nitrate concentrations during the last ice age.

The Southern Ocean regulates the ocean's biological sequestration of CO2 and is widely suspected to underpin much of the ice age decline in atmospheric CO2 concentration, but the specific changes in the region are debated. Although more complete drawdown of surface nutrients by phytoplankton during the ice ages is supported by some sediment core-based measurements, the use of different proxies ...

Decadal biogeochemical changes in the subtropical Indian Ocean associated with Subantarctic Mode Water

[1] Within the Subantarctic Mode Water (SAMW) density level, we study temporal changes in salinity, nutrients, oxygen and TTD (Transit Time Distribution) ages in the western (W) and eastern (E) subtropical gyre of the Indian Ocean (IO) from 1987 to 2002. Additionally, changes in Total Alkalinity (TA) and Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) are evaluated between 1995 and 2002. The mechanisms behind...

Warming of Global Abyssal and Deep Southern Ocean Waters Between the 1990s and 2000s: Contributions to Global Heat and Sea Level Rise Budgets

Abyssal global and deep Southern Ocean temperature trends are quantified between the 1990s and 2000s to assess the role of recent warming of these regions in global heat and sea level budgets. The authors 1) compute warming rates with uncertainties along 28 full-depth, high-quality hydrographic sections that have been occupied two or more times between 1980 and 2010; 2) divide the global ocean ...

On Wind-Driven Mid-Latitude Convection in Ocean General Circulation

Several computational experiments were carried out with a state-of-the-art ocean general circulation model to identify the northward directed Ekman transport of Antarctic and Subantarctic origin surface water as a mechanism which forces mid-latitude convection. The results indicate that the wind-driven transport of water in the surface layer is most efficient at increasing the depth of convecti...

Mean sea surface height of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current from Geosat data: Method and application

The mean sea surface height across the Antarctic Circumpolar Current has been reconstructed from height variability measured by the Geosat altimeter without assuming prior knowledge of the geoid. For this study, an automated technique has been developed to estimate mean sea surface height for each satellite ground track using a meandering Gaussian jet model, and errors have been estimated using...
